Comparison

PC-based playback vs Pixout

A side-by-side look at what changes when you move from a media-server rig to a standalone ArtNet recorder.

PC-based playback

  • Reliability: a dedicated PC must run 24/7 on site
  • Environment: indoor use only — dust, heat and humidity are enemies
  • Cost: recurring software licences and dongle replacements
  • Maintenance: OS patches, antivirus pop-ups and reboots interrupt the show
  • Control: remote access requires VPN and IT involvement
Usual ArtNet DMX setup with a dedicated PC

Pixout standalone

  • Reliability: embedded controller with watchdog — no PC needed
  • Environment: IP67 outdoor enclosure (S-100) or indoor rackmount (I-100, D-100)
  • Cost: one-time licence, no annual fees — universe upgrades unlock by key
  • Maintenance: automatic OTA updates outside show hours, ready in minutes
  • Control: web panel, iOS/Android app, REST API

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I pay for your products?
We accept credit and debit cards online via Stripe. B2B customers can also pay by bank transfer / invoice — contact sales@pixout.lighting.
What shipping types are available?
Standard internal shipping and Express Shipping (TNT, DHL, UPS). Free standard shipping is available for selected items.
Is VAT included in the price?
VAT is not included since most of our clients are companies. For individual purchases, drop us a line and we'll sort out a final price for you.
Is there a Windows-based software available?
Our software is web-based — use it with any modern browser on Windows, Linux, macOS, or iOS. Control Pixout from the web admin panel and make ArtNet recordings.
Can Pixout accept ArtNet data from my controller (GrandMA3 / MADRIX)?
Yes, if your controller supports ArtNet output. Tested with GrandMA (2/3), MADRIX, Mad Mapper, Enttec LED Mapper, Chamsys MagicQ, Resolume Arena, ArKaos, and others.
Can I buy a Pixout controller for ArtNet output only?
Yes, the default configuration works with ArtNet out of the box.
Can Pixout Controller output to WS2812b LED strips?
Sending ArtNet directly to WS2812b via SPI is not available yet. The hardware supports SPI, but this feature is not production-ready. Use ArtNet-to-WS281x converters for this purpose.
What's the difference between an ArtNet recorder and a media server?
A media server generates content live and needs a PC running 24/7. An ArtNet recorder like Pixout captures the finished DMX output once and plays it back from internal storage — no PC, no licence renewals, no crashes during a show.
How many fixtures can 64 universes drive?
64 universes equals 32,768 DMX channels — roughly 10,900 RGB pixels or 6,500 RGBW pixels. Plenty for stadium scoreboards, building façades and large architectural installations.
Can I trigger cues from a show control system?
Yes. Pixout accepts triggers over GPIO, MIDI, UDP, ArtTrigger and HTTP REST — integrate with Crestron, AMX, Q-SYS, Medialon or any system that can fire a URL or send a UDP packet.
